Life in Irons: Brisbane's Convict Stories

Moreton Bay penal colony was established by the British Government to “…reinstate transportation as an object of real terror to all classes of society”. It succeeded. Life in Irons: Brisbane’s Convict Stories provides a vivid insight into daily life in the settlement using original documents, personal accounts, historical objects and contemporary art, brought to life with immersive new technologies.

Tony Albert: Visible

Dream Build

Budding architects get the chance to create their dream Queenslander using a template designed by Bristopia artist Megan McKean. The distinctive architecture of Brisbane’s timber and tin homes gets a whimsical makeover by McKean Studio in this engaging DIY art project where you colour, cut and build a three-dimensional paper house to take home.

19th and 20th Century Works

View some of the finest pieces from the Ipswich Art Gallery’s collection of 19th and early 20th century fine art and folk art, as well as contemporary works reflecting Ipswich’s heritage. Visit the upper level to see exceptional works such as the mid-19th century cedar sideboard crafted by George Dowden for the Cribb family’s historic Ipswich residence ‘Gooloowan’, Australian paintings such as Frosty morning by key Australian landscape painter Elioth Gruner, and the exquisite Australian wildflower tea service designed by renowned Australian botanical artist Ellis Rowan.

James Turrell's Night Life 2018

Iconic Australian Houses: an Exhibition by Karen McCartney

Presented in partnership with Architecture Foundation Australia this exhibition is a behind-the-scenes exploration of 30 of the most important Australian homes of the past 60 years. The exhibition explores the design and building of these houses, as well as the experiences of those who live in them, and illustrates the emergence of a distinctively Australian approach to home design.
