Festivals

Indigenous events

Tropical North Queensland is home to both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures and these cultures shine at the Keep the Flame of Culture Burning Festival. Find unique Aboriginal art or catch performing acts that merge culture and contemporary dance at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF).

Heading north to the Torres Strait? Grab a spot on the grass and enjoy traditional Torres Strait Island dancing at the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival or hear live bands at the Yarrabah Band Festival, just 50 minutes south of Cairns.

Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic

During the marlin season from September to December each year, the Lizard Island Game Fishing Club organises a unique seven-day tournament for members and qualified visitors. Because of the size of the black marlin encountered in the fishery, the Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic is the only tournament worldwide that justifies the use of heavy (60kg or 130lb) tackle.

The Mission Beach Markets are local community markets run by Rotary Mission Beach. The Mission Beach Markets are held in the shady Day Park beside the beach on Porter Promenade, Mission Beach. They run from 7am until 12noon, and are held on the first and third Sunday of each month all year round.

Join them on a free 30 minute tour of the Art Deco inspired Innisfail Shire Hall! The Innisfail Shire Hall is the jewel in the crown, of the Art Deco Capital of Australia - Innisfail. It was built to provide jobs as part of an employment relief scheme instigated by the Queensland Government during the great depression of the 1930's It was in this climate that the Johnstone Shire Council erected the Shire Hall which has dominated the Innisfail Skyline for over 70 years.
